Please share the inception story of Contentholic and your journey so far.
After graduating from English, I had no choice but to go for a professional degree (MBA) in order to start earning well, as I was never inclined towards boring Government Sectors jobs. During my bachelor’s I explored many ways to earn money, be it coaching school kids, selling broadband connections, making resumes for people to formatting and fixing computers and what not. I joined Vodafone Call Center for 6 months and later also gave soft-skills training to networking professionals to prepare them for job interviews. After all these, when I went for management studies in Chandigarh, I was very determined that I will be a human resource manager, taking interviews and managing the hiring process. But, when I went for an internship in Reliance Human Resource Services (RHRS) I was exposed to the reality of the HR industry and how this actually operates in the real world. My dreams of being an HR was distorted and I decided to pursue marketing which was my second specialization in the dual degree program I opted for. It was the period of Great Recession and markets were literally jobless and students were left with no choice except joining jobs even at INR 15,000 per month. When my batch mates were preparing for interviews, I was brewing up my start-up idea. The concept was to record and create all the lectures in audio (podcasts) and videos, but with no funds in hand and pressure to pay education loans I had to look for some quick earning with zero investments, so it all went in vain.
With my writing skills and some previous experience of writing blogs and articles, I moved to New Delhi and started offering content writing services. This was the time when 99 % of the people in India were not aware of this term. I created my own website Suneet.in by watching YouTube videos on WordPress. After working with advertising agencies, digital agencies and start-ups, I learnt digital marketing and branding and started promoting myself. I started Contentholic in 2011 just after a few months of freelancing, with a vision to form a formal content writing agency. Slowly I learnt digital marketing, advertising, event management and PR over the years but my love for writing never stopped as I was very connected to writing, after all, this skill of writing helped me survive in the world of high competition. Our business grew to more than double and operational expenses came to zero as operations closed from our Connaught Place Office immediately after the first lockdown and all our writers started working from home. This year, we have started our operations again in other smaller cities like Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Pune with smaller offices to start with. We are planning to open our centers in Lucknow and Hyderabad soon as these cities are rapidly growing.
As an agency, what steps are you taking to acquire new customers or retain the existing ones in these challenging times of Covid-19?
Our main focus is to retain existing customers and at the same time, we are growing organically to cater more coverage not only in India but across the globe. We are soon moving to Ed-tech business by early next year hopefully. With national and international media recognizing our work and with word of mouth publicity from previous clients, we are growing organically.
Would you like to give some tips to aspiring writers or freelance content writers?
Since I also started as a freelance content writer, I would like to suggest budding writers and freelance professionals to focus on their own branding organically. While working for a company or a brand, always try to learn and enhance your knowledge in order to grow fast. Every organization is willing to retain its top performers so create that dependence in the company by offering extraordinary work. During the pandemic, I also retained my top performers only and rest were given the notice period immediately, when it’s business you have to stick to the basics. People do not remember average performers and if you are seeking extraordinary growth, always strive for excellence.
Where do you see Contentholic to be in the long run and what are your future goals?
Contentholic will keep on offering quality writing services, currently focused in academic writing but later when things are normal, we will cater to other domains as well. We are working on different in-house products as well which will make our business self-sustainable, which has been my dream for many years now.
