How John Lewis Went From College Athlete to Business Mentor

Living in New Orleans, Louisiana, John Lewis was from an area where people only seemed to make it out of the neighborhood by playing sports or getting into the entertainment industry. He had a natural love for sports, ultimately choosing to play basketball in his spare time. Feeling like there was no other option, there was lots of pressure to excel as an athlete, Lewis went on to play D1 and D2 basketball in college. While in college, he met an incredible business mentor who inspired him to want even more in life. 

“My business mentor was earning around 60k a week, was a man of faith, and had this amazing family. I couldn’t help but want that for myself. I loved the idea of living comfortably, running a business, and having a genuinely good life,” said Lewis. “After living with my mentor for a year, I decided it was time to take the plunge and work on building my own business. I was only 19 years old and had a lot to learn. I purchased a course and focused on creating a blueprint for the business, but it didn’t work the way I expected. It took five years for me to crack the code involved in building a profitable business.”

With inspiration from his business mentor and the support of a determined team of unpaid employees working collectively to master the art of operating a highly efficient business, Lewis learned valuable lessons that ultimately led to the company’s first six-figure week. “I went through many struggles while trying to build a business that I believed would take off. There were times when I was living off rice and eggs and paying for gas with quarters because money was so tight. These were difficult times, but I learned valuable lessons throughout it all, and I’m where I’m at today because of that. I’ve since learned that having a successful business typically requires relying on advanced technology, systems and process, team building, and team training.” While some would give up when times get tough, John Lewis thought of his business mentor’s success and knew he could achieve that level of success if he put his mind and heart into everything.
